Better Scouting for More Young People in Old Malden - new Explorer Scout Unit formed!

1st Old Malden (St. John the Baptist) Scout Group is delighted to announce the formation of a local Explorer Scout Unit in the parish for young people aged 14 to 18.This follows an informal experiment where our older Scouts received a separate programme of activities at separate meetings aimed at their age range during the spring and summer and is now the next natural step in ensuring the parish provides an exciting programme of activities for all young people, whatever their age. GirlGuiding UK locally has also supported this initiative and a number of ex, or older Girl Guides have been fully involved. The new unit will be very much part of the Old Malden Scout family and will be led by Richard Gooud, with assistance from  Claire Evans. They've been working hard over the summer holidays to ensure everything is in place for the September launch. They will meet at the Old Malden Scout Centre on Tuesdays weekly - but they plan to be more "out" than "in"!While our new Explorer Scouts will be showing themselves off at our next church parade at St. John's on 20 September, they will be looking forward to some exciting and adventurous activities which will hopefully lead to some achievements within the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme or through earning the highest Scout award, the Queen's Scout Award. The unit is likely to be initially full at launch, following the success of the informal arrangement. However, if any other young people within the age range are interested in finding out more about Explorer Scouts, then they should make contact with Richard on richardgooud@hotmail.com or 020 8337 1435.Tim EggittGroup Scout Leader1st Old Malden (St. John the Baptist) Scout Group

As an update, I'm really pleased to say that we had 19 young people attend the first meeting of the new unit on 15 September! Good luck to you all!
